Kościół Akademicki jest sercem naszego uniwersytetu.
Znajduje się w centrum kampusu głównego. Jest najistotniejszym punktem odniesienia i najczytelniejszym znakiem
wartości, wyznawanych przez społeczność akademicką
Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego.
Studenci, pracownicy, absolwenci i przyjaciele uniwersytetu
tworzą wspólnotę wiary, która sprawia, że KUL jest uczelnią wyjątkową. W sposób szczególny związany jest z nią
Karol Wojtyła – Jan Paweł II. Przypominają o tym relikwie
Świętego, znajdujące się w Kościele Akademickim KUL.

Uniwersyteckie tradycje wyznaczone przez wiarę
Historia kościoła Świętego Krzyża sięga roku 1434. Pierwszy budynek był
zbudowany z drewna. W latach 1603-1623 zastąpiła go budowla murowana. W 1667 roku przy świątyni powstał klasztor pozamiejski dominikanów obserwantów. Kiedy w 1800 roku klasztor uległ kasacie, budynki
klasztorne zamieniono na szpital wojskowy, a kościół stracił swój sakralny
charakter. Pierwsza wojna światowa niemal doszczętnie go zniszczyła.

W 1918 roku, z inicjatywy ks. Idziego Radziszewskiego, powołano do
życia Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski. Utworzenie KUL odpowiadało na
potrzebę odbudowania wyniszczonej wojną polskiej inteligencji. Budynki
dawnego klasztoru zostały ofiarowane uniwersytetowi przez marszałka
Józefa Piłsudskiego w 1921 roku. Rekonsekracja kościoła nastąpiła po
przejęciu budynków przez uniwersytet.
W trudnych czasach międzywojennych długo
poszukiwano funduszy na przywrócenie budowli
dawnego blasku. Restauracja kościoła wykonana
w latach 30. XX wieku, na podstawie projektu
prof. Mariana Lalewicza, nadała świątyni obecny
charakter.
Historia kościoła, splatając się z historią uniwersytetu sprawia, że na KUL wychowanie polskiej
młodzieży odbywa się w duchu wartości
chrześcijańskich.
Alegoria miłości i wolności nawiązująca do przesłania encykliki
św. Jana XXIII, ukazana za pośrednictwem scen z Ewangelii.

Legenda o relikwiach Krzyża Świętego
O początkach kościoła Świętego Krzyża w Lublinie mówi
jedna z legend dominikańskich. Pewien gdański kupiec chciał
wykraść z klasztoru relikwie, jednak podczas drogi konie
zatrzymały się w miejscu, gdzie obecnie znajduje się Kościół
Akademicki KUL. Kupiec zrozumiał zło, jakiego się dopuścił
i w zadośćuczynieniu wybudował świątynię.
Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II bierze na siebie
odpowiedzialność zachowywania i krzewienia kultury wiary
poprzez międzynarodową działalność naukową oraz
wychowywanie studentów z Polski, Europy i świata.
Duszpasterstwo akademickie
– uniwersytet, który wychowuje
Duszpasterstwo w Kościele Akademickim KUL, prowadzone
przez ojców jezuitów to miejsce, do którego się chętnie wraca. Kościół Świętego Krzyża skupia 15 wspólnot i grup, m.in.: Wolontariat Misyjny, Chór, Ruch Światło-Życie, Akademicki Punkt Wolontariatu, Grupa Taizé. Duszpasterstwo prowadzi poradnictwo
duchowe i psychologiczne, organizowane są wykłady, wyjazdy integracyjne i pielgrzymki. Studenci mogą spotkać się w prowadzonej obok kościoła herbaciarni. Duża aktywność wspólnot stanowi
o sile społeczności akademickiej KUL i sprawia, że 15 000 studentów i ponad 1200 naukowców odczuwa silną więź z uniwersytetem i jego kościołem.

Opieka nad Kościołem Akademickim wyrazem
troski o chrześcijańskie dziedzictwo Europy
Kościół Akademicki KUL wymaga pilnych remontów. Jest częścią
kulturowego dziedzictwa Lublina, stąd wszelkie prace muszą odbywać
się pod opieką Wojewódzkiego Konserwatora Zabytków. To sprawia,
że koszt remontów jest bardzo wysoki - sięga prawie 700 tys. złotych.
Przeprowadzono już pewne prace. Uniwersytet nie jest jednak w stanie samodzielnie udźwignąć obciążenia finansowego, jakim jest pełny
remont.

Papieska encyklika na murach Kościoła
Szczególnej troski wymaga polichromia zdobiąca mury świątyni.
Tworzy ona unikalny w skali świata program ikonograficzny, oparty
na nauczaniu św. Jana XXIII w encyklice Pacem in terris. Obszerny
temat został przedstawiony w konwencji stylistyki średniowiecznej. Sceny figuralne, wzbogacone o świętych kanonizowanych
w XX w. i motywy architektury Lublina, stanowią rozwiązanie nowoczesne i unikatowe. Przesłanie polichromii dotyczy podstawowych wartości społecznych: prawdy, sprawiedliwości, miłości, wolności. Kierowane jest do ludzi wszystkich kultur i narodowości.

The Holy Cross Academic Church
of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin
– the beating heart of the Catholic University
The Academic Church is the heart of our University. It is
located in the very centre of the main campus. It is also the
most important reference point and the most visible sign of
the values cherished by the academic community at the John
Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.
Students, employees, alumni and friends of the University
create a community of faith that makes the John Paul II
Catholic University of Lublin a unique university. It is
especially connected with Karol Wojtyła – Pope John Paul II.
We are reminded about this fact by the relics of this Saint
located in the Academic Church.
University traditions determined by faith
The history of the Holy Cross Church dates back to 1434. The first building
was made of wood. Between 1603 and 1623, it was replaced by a brick
construction. In 1667, an extra-urban monastery of the Dominicans of the
Strict Observance was established near the church. In 1800, the monastery
was dissolved, and its buildings were transformed into a military hospital, as
a result of which the church lost its sacral character. It was almost completely
destroyed during World War I.
In 1918, on the initiative of Rev. Idzi Radziszewski, the Catholic University of
Lublin was established. This was an answer to the need to recreate the Polish
intelligentsia, devastated by the War. In 1921, Marshal Józef Piłsudski donated
the buildings of the old monastery to the University. The reconsecration of the
church followed the taking over of the buildings by the University.
The difficult interwar period saw a long search
for funds to return the structure to its former
glory. The restoration of the church was carried
out in the 1930s. It was based on the design of
Prof. Marian Lalewicz and gave the temple its
current form.
The history of the church, intertwined with the
history of the University, has witnessed the
education of Polish young people at KUL in line
with Christian values.
The legend of the Holy Cross relics
According to tradition, the Holy Cross relics located in the Dominican Order
monastery in Lublin are fragments of the Cross of Christ that was found in the 4th
century by St Helena, mother of the emperor Constantius. The relics were to unite
Europe under one faith.
One Dominican legend tells us about the beginnings of the Holy Cross Church
in Lublin. According to this legend, a merchant from Gdańsk wanted to steal the
relics from the monastery; however, his horses stopped at the current location of
the Academic Church of KUL, and would not move. The merchant understood the
evil he had done and built the temple to make amends for it.
The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin is responsible for the preservation
and popularisation of the culture of the faith through its international scholarly
activities and education of students from Poland, Europe and the whole world.
Campus ministry – a university that brings up people
At the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin we firmly believe that passing
on only knowledge is not enough. What is needed is an upbringing to a conscious
Christian life. Catholic ethics and the social teaching of the Church are reflected in
practice in ministerial activities.
The ministry, run by the Jesuits, at the Academic Church of the John Paul II Catholic
University of Lublin, is a place people are happy to return to. The Holy Cross Church
encompasses 15 communities and groups, including the Missionary Voluntary
Service, a Choir, the Light-Life Movement, the Academic Point of Voluntary Service
and the Taizé Group. The ministry provides spiritual and psycho-logical counselling,
and organises lectures, integration trips and pilgrimages. Moreover, students can
meet at a tea room located near the church.
The substantial activity of the aforementioned communities determines the strength
of the entire the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin academic community.
Thanks to it, 15 000 students and more than 1200 academics are closely connected
to the university and the church.
By taking care of the Academic Church, one takes
care of the Christian heritage
The Academic Church of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin needs
an urgent redecoration. It is part of the cultural heritage of Lublin, so all works
have to be supervised by the Voivodeship Conservation Officer. This makes
the cost of such redecoration very high. It amounts to nearly PLN 700 000.
Despite some works having already been completed, the University cannot
bear the financial burden of the full redecoration on its own.
The most pressing works are the following:
insulating the ceiling
renovating polychrome elements
installing alarm and fire-protection systems
painting walls inside the church
replacing the organ
replacing the power installation
The Holy Cross Church is part of the Christian heritage
of Poland and the heart of the John Paul II Catholic
University of Lublin. Therefore, we would like to kindly

A Papal encyclical on the walls of the Church
The polychrome adorning the walls of the church needs special attention.
It creates an iconographic programme unique at the global level and based
on the teachings of St John XXIII, included in the Pacem in terris encyclical.
This extensive topic is presented in line with a Mediaeval-style convention.
Figural scenes, enriched by saints canonised in the 20th century and Lublin
architecture motifs, constitute a modern and unique solution. The message
of this polychrome concerns the fundamental social values: truth, justice,
love and freedom. It is addressed to people of all cultures and nationalities.
Every day, there is a Mass for the living and deceased benefactors of the
John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin at the Academic Church. A sincere
